Simple Explanation

This project focused on creating guidelines for physical activity counseling tailored for adults with spinal cord injuries (SCI). It brought together experts, including researchers, counselors, and people with SCI, to develop these best practices. The guidelines cover how to conduct a counseling session and what topics to address, emphasizing a client-centered approach and understanding individual barriers to physical activity. The aim is to standardize and improve the delivery of physical activity counseling to adults with SCI across different settings, ensuring more consistent and effective support.

Key Findings

  • 1
The project resulted in a best practices document that includes an introduction, the best practices themselves, considerations for implementation, and a glossary of terms.
  • 2
Best practices emphasize building rapport, using a client-centered approach based on motivational interviewing, understanding barriers, and sharing SCI physical activity guidelines.
  • 3
External experts rated the developed best practices as clear, useful, and appropriate, indicating their potential for practical application.

Research Summary

This project used a systematic and integrated knowledge translation (IKT) approach to co-create theory- and evidence-based best practices for physical activity counseling for adults with spinal cord injury (SCI). The best practices document includes an introduction, the best practices, things to keep in mind, and a glossary. Best practices focused on how to deliver a conversation and what to discuss during a conversation. We present the first systematically co-developed theory- and evidence-based best practices for SCI physical activity counseling. The implementation of the best practices will be supported by developing training modules.

Practical Implications

Improved Consistency in Counseling

The best practices can facilitate greater consistency in SCI PA counseling services offered within and outside research settings.

Foundation for Interventions

Researchers and intervention developers are encouraged to use these best practices as the foundation for their PA counseling interventions and trials.

Enhanced Counselor Support

The best practices may help counselors with a variety of backgrounds improve upon the support delivered to their clients with SCI, tailored to unique PA barriers and needs.

Study Limitations

  • 1
The study acknowledges that it is unknown if using the best practices will result in positive changes in clients’ PA levels, either short-term or long-term.
  • 2
The panel emphasized that the effectiveness of the best practices highly depends on the counselor’s skills, knowledge and expertise.
  • 3
The study acknowledges that they have not included perspectives of people from other ethnicities or sexual orientations.
