This case report describes an extremely rare condition where calcium deposits form on the nerves of the cauda equina (the bundle of nerves at the base of the spinal cord) following a traumatic injury. The patient, a 52-year-old female, had a history of lumbar spinal stenosis and a lumbar vertebral fracture caused by trauma, which led to weakness and sensory loss in her right lower limb. Computed tomography (CT) scans revealed calcification of the cauda equina nerve. The patient was treated with a combination of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, including medication to reduce swelling and pain, as well as physical therapy to improve blood circulation. The patient's symptoms were slightly relieved after treatment.
Raises awareness of post-traumatic cauda equina nerve calcification as a rare but possible complication of spinal trauma.
Suggests conservative treatment options involving both traditional and western medicine, although the optimal approach remains unclear.
Emphasizes the need for further research into the etiology, mechanism, and treatment of post-traumatic cauda equina nerve calcification.
