Simple Explanation

This study investigates the quality of life (QoL) and its associated risk factors among caregivers of people with spinal cord injury (SCI) to find possible ways to increase their QoL. The family members of people with SCI, who become informal caregivers, are usually the primary source of assistance and facilitate activities such as eating, dressing, and toileting. The level of injury, self-perceived caregiver burden, and depression are associated with QoL for the caregivers of people with SCI.

Study Duration
June 2018 to October 2019
Participants
135 Iranian caregivers of people with SCI
Evidence Level
Cross-sectional study

Key Findings

  • 1
Moderate to highly significant negative correlations were observed between all domains of the WHOQoL scale and subscales of the CBS and the BDI-II.
  • 2
After controlling for demographic and clinical variables, depression, burden, and level of injury were found to predict caregiver QoL significantly.
  • 3
QoL was lower in caregivers of people with quadriplegia than paraplegia (p < 0:05).

Research Summary

This study examined the factors affecting the quality of life (QoL) of caregivers of individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) in Iran. The study found that caregiver QoL was significantly influenced by factors such as the level of injury of the person with SCI, the caregiver's perceived burden, and their level of depression. The findings suggest that a holistic approach, including caregiver training, psychological interventions, and support systems, is crucial for improving the QoL of caregivers of individuals with SCI.

Practical Implications

Caregiver Training Programs

Implement targeted training programs for caregivers focusing on managing burden and preventing depression.

Psychological Support

Provide psychological interventions to address the mental health needs of caregivers.

Resource Accessibility

Improve access to resources and support systems for caregivers of individuals with SCI.

Study Limitations

  • 1
Single-center study with a relatively small sample size.
  • 2
Convenience sampling method limits the generalizability of the findings.
  • 3
Not all factors that affect QoL were included in this study.
