This case report describes a patient with spina bifida, diabetes, and obesity who developed a severe sacral ulcer complicated by osteomyelitis. The patient's conditions made the ulcer difficult to heal. Surgical debridement using a hydrosurgery system was performed to remove dead tissue, and a loop colostomy was created to prevent stool contamination of the wound. These interventions aimed to improve healing and prevent further complications. The case highlights the challenges of managing complex wounds in patients with multiple health issues and emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach.
Emphasizes the need for coordinated care involving surgeons, endocrinologists, wound care specialists, and infectious disease experts.
Highlights the importance of early surgical debridement and antibiotic therapy, tailored to individual patient characteristics, particularly in obese individuals.
Stresses the need for heightened clinical suspicion for osteomyelitis in patients with neuropathy, with regular screenings and early diagnostic interventions.
