This study explores a surgical technique for patients with ankylosing spondylitis who also suffer a fracture in their spine and have a hunched back. The technique involves a one-time surgery from the back where surgeons reshape the fractured vertebra (eggshell osteotomy) and stabilize the spine with screws and rods. The goal is to see if this surgery is safe and effective for fixing the fracture, correcting the hunched back, and improving the patient's pain and quality of life. The study looks back at the records of 20 patients who had this surgery to see how well it worked and what complications occurred.
The eggshell osteotomy technique offers a viable surgical option for ankylosing spondylitis patients suffering from both kyphosis and vertebral fractures.
The study suggests that this surgical approach can lead to significant improvements in patient pain, function, and quality of life.
The technique is effective in correcting kyphosis and restoring spinal alignment, which is crucial for long-term spinal health.
